Racial Prejudice And Its Effects On Society - 887 Words

Racial prejudice can often occur during first impressions, as individuals quickly associate a person’s appearance with particular personality characteristics. An example of this association would be to assume that someone who is wearing a hijab is a terrorist or that someone of an Asian decent is highly intellectual. These associations are often used to organise our lives and arrange the overwhelming stimulation, however individuals must be able to discriminate when categorizing is appropriate and when it is inappropriate. To reduce problems of racial prejudice in society, individuals need to recognize and alter these cognitive strategies that are causing them to briefly categorize people inappropriately. Nonetheless, children need to become aware of these destructive cognitive strategies and discouraged from categorizing people as well. Witter, Hammer and Dunn discuss in the textbook Adjust, that stereotypes are frequently automatic customs that occur unintentionally and unc onsciously. However, they also express that these automatic customs can be superseded, though it requires awareness from the individual that their prejudgment are flawed. If effort it put forth, individuals can alter their subjective negative perceptions, reforming them towards thoughts of equality and kindness towards all members in society. Leadership As A Leader And Gaining Leadership Qualities

As a result of living in a society that puts a great deal of importance on becoming a leader and gaining leadership qualities, work places and organisations have now resulted in investing large sums in sponsoring employees take part in leadership programs and training courses. The term leadership is broad and open to interpretation. Peters and Waterman (1982, P. 79) define leadership as â€Å"meticulously shifting the attention of the institutions through the mundane language of management systems. It is altering agendas so that new agendas get attention. It is being visible when things go awry and invisible when they are working well. It is building a loyal team that speaks more or less with one voice. It’s listening carefully most of the†¦show more content†¦There are many theories that contribute to the discussion of leadership some of which are: Trait, Behavioural, Contingency, Relational theory and the Style theory. The contingency theory claims that there is n o set way to lead an organisation. This is due to the fact that both external and internal factors need to be considered by the leader and need to be handled accordingly. The Relational theory looks into how relations within an organisation develop leaders and at how leaders are required to be accustomed to others within the organisation. The Style theory of leadership proposes that they style of leadership is the key to good leadership. It looks at leaders and their style of leadership for example Steve Jobs would lead in a very autocratic manner whereas Richard Branson is seen to be a democratic leader. The managerial grid is also part of the style based theory; it allows people to embrace a leadership style that is both people friendly and achieve target production. However this theory has been criticised of being too simplistic as different people would prefer to be lead in different ways. Having said this there are two main theories that have become the result of this debate: b ehavioural and trait. The trait theory believes that people are born with leadership characteristics such as imagination, determination and enthusiasm. The analysis of mental, physical and social attributes of leaders resulted in the trait theory being developed. Whereas the behavioural

Ford Motor Company Free Essays

1.Discuss at least three criteria the company should use to decide which of the four listed options is best and the reasons why each criterion should be used. Based on the case study (what would you do?) it listed four options for the Ford company, here are the three criterion the company should use to decide which of the four listed is best and the reasons why each criterion should work and be used. We will write a custom essay sample on Ford Motor Company or any similar topic only for you Order Now The first rule for testing these 4 options is the reason for being in business to make a profit, which is what the stock holders expect. The next judgment would be to examine the options and weigh the profitability of each or a combination of them. The next standard would be longevity or measuring what options would sustain the Ford Motor company for years to come. Let’s look at option 1 that suggests closing older plants to realign production and sales. The criterion is you don’t want to produce more product than you can sell in this case it is cars. Ford Motor Company has been losing money for years particularly in its North American operations. According to Mandy Bennett’s Ford Motor company 2004 annual report â€Å"The Ford Motor Company has had many (Bennett, 2004) disappointments in the past several years†. These criteria should be examined and applied just as Mr. A Mulally (CEO of Ford Motor company) negotiated with labor unions to successfully slash more than 30,000 jobs, and close factories. Ford spent $700 million on severance packages and paid layoff expenditures for union workers. This in turn gave Ford a cash cushion to float on for the time being while working out long term profitable plans. (S Holmes, 2006) 2. Discuss at least three examples of how the company should build in flexibility to back-up its decision-making process. One way the company should build in flexibility is to use the options listed in the case study and invest in all of the ideas. By Making small investments in all four options at the same time it will provide the flexibility to back up the each option. Like a fail safety net, the better an option works the more money and resources can be added to it. The options with the least progress can be minimized or relinquished. For example put four managers in charge of the four plans with an equal amount of budget to get the job done and roll out the plan. (Williams, 2010) 3. Discuss how an effective action plan can be created and how progress can be monitored. Developing and effective action plan would be to list the detailed steps or the how to get the job done type manual. Hire the right people who could get the job done proficiently, provide them with the appropriate means and time frame to get the work done. The next step would be to track or monitor the plan to make sure the results are profitable. According to the Management text the best thing to do is set up proximal and distal goals. Proximal goals are short term and distal goals are long term main goal (Williams, 2010). This would be perfect for the flexibility plan discussed in discussion two, hiring four teams and setting up a tracking progress to decide which plans to further fund. 4. List at least three steps that make-up a workable plan explain why each is important. There is a television show that use to come on years ago called the A-team and one of the main characters (Hanabal) use to say after a successful mission† I love it when a plan comes together†. That phrase describes a workable plan; it is when everything comes together in one direction manifesting the complete goal. This all starts with the top managers creating structural purpose declaration and deliberate objectives. Middle managers coming next with premeditated plans that they bring about with specific objectives to inspire there staff. The last step ends with the first level managers who develop and carry out the operation of the plan by using policies and procedures. The policies are standing plans that specifies the overall course of action that should be taken in reaction to a particular event or condition. Procedures are also standing plans that indicate the specific steps that should be taken in response to a particular event (Williams, 2010). 5. Discuss the option combination of options you selected as the best course of action for Ford Motor Company and detail your reasons for selecting that option or combination of options. I would definitely choose a combination of options for the best course of action for the Ford Motor company. Based on my research and text reading it is better to have flexibility and back-ups, so I prefer to combine options to create a flexible plan platform. The combination I selected is to close down older plants in an effort to realign production and sales, to move the company to produce only smaller cars, eliminating or sharply reducing the SUV and truck lines, and The fourth option is to sell the entire PAG group, letting someone else figure out how to make money selling so few vehicles a year. The first option of closing old plants to realign production and sales is a smart move. It allows the company to produce fewer cars and shift the supply and demand curve to their favor in their business. What I mean by that is by producing fewer cars the price can decrease and more people can buy more cars. The law of supply states that the supply increases as prices increase and decreases as prices decrease, at a lower price, more people can afford to buy more goods and more of an item more frequently, than they can at a higher price. This will allow the next option to fall in line as well by moving the company to produce smaller cars saves the company money in the cost to make the smaller cars. Gas prices are at an all-time rise so people would appreciate this. SUV and truck lines are becoming more and more costly to consumers and producers alike. Producing smaller cars can also have a positive effect on the supply and demand law. Supply and demand states that at lower prices, people tend to buy some goods as a substitute for others more expensive. Lastly Selling the PAG group, this approach has worked for Ford in the past. It works and takes a huge expense off of the company. How to cite Ford Motor Company, Essay examples Ford Motor Company Free Essays Henry Ford Henry Ford was one of America’s greatest businessperson, the founder of Ford Motor Company and the man largely responsible for mass production in the American economy. This achievement led Ford to becoming a rich and famous man. Ever since Ford was a child, he had a dream to become an engineer and to manufacture cars. We will write a custom essay sample on Ford Motor Company or any similar topic only for you Order Now He began to pursue his dream when he Introduced the Assembly line, by breaking down production into simple tasks. He lowered the skill level needed to work in a factory, which allowed enormous amounts of products to be produced at lower prices. During the sass’s, Henry Ford’s management skills and leadership of The Ford Motor Company expanded the economy by making cars available to all Americans and stimulating industries related to the automobile empire. One way Henry Ford expanded the economy was by making automobiles available to all Americans. His Motor Company helped him produce and manufacture tons of cars. In order to get his company running, he had to pay employees at a lower rate, but also made sure they were paid enough so expenses were affordable. The automobiles made Its Impact felt first In rural areas where cars were used for oaring. They were also used for pastime on the weekends and soon enough the cars were replacing existing transit that brought people to and from work in urban areas (Melodies). Automobiles spurred over many areas, but rural areas were first because of all the activities happening on the weekends. As well as, the number of people who used automobiles to get to and from work. As a matter of fact, â€Å"the convenience of the automobile freed people from the need to live near rail lines or stations; they could choose locations almost anywhere in an urban area, as long as roads were available to connect them to other places† ( History of Automobile). The automobile allowed people to live wherever they chose to rather than living in a specific area, Just so they could get to work or travel places. â€Å"As automobile sales increased, the demand for fuel led to a more systematic way of delivery, and In 1914, Standard 011 of California opened a chain of 34 standardized stations among the West Coast† (Melodies). This is implying that the demand for fuel allowed the automobile companies produce more so that they could get more consumers and increase the assure for all Americans. In fact, â€Å"three hundred men were now employed by the Ford Motor Company, and they were making twenty-five cars a day, and the company was supplying a sales force of 450 agencies across the continent† ( Titlists). The more men meant that more cars were produced, and the more cars produced intended that more cars were available to the employees and any other Americans. Ford’s Company later â€Å"increased the production of cars by building several models offering different amenities be sold simultaneously at deferent prices, the company’s ratters hoped to maximize their profits by appealing to a large number of car buyers† (39). By building more different models people had the option to choose what type of car they wanted to get. It also allowed an average American to decide whether to purchase a stylish car that less expensive, or a appealing car that was more class; however, with various models, even a simple car was made affordable by an average household. Overall, cars helped the workers and the Americans because it reduced the work they had to put into carrying parts to and from work and it allowed any people to live freely rather than living in an area where communication to work was accessible. Another way Henry Ford expanded the economy was by stimulating industries related to the automobile empire. For example, â€Å"oil and steel were two well- established industries that received a serious boost by the demand for automobiles† (Age of the Automobile). Many industries like the oil and steel were increasing production for more automobiles being produced. During this automobile era, â€Å"manufacturing became a highly mechanized process in which mass manufacturing was performed by unskilled workers and the assembly line cut down on human handling, and machines were designed to handle multiple tasks†(Bianca). In other words, quick development was a very important skill that unskilled workers had to master; however, this was made easy because a lot of the times machines did most of the work and the workers would have to put a little effort to make sure everything was right. This enabled Ford â€Å"to increase production from about 475 cars in a nine-hour day to more than 1,200 auto assemblies in an eight-hour day’ (Bianca). Due to more manufacturing of cars and more products of steel, rubber, and glass being created, Ford increased the production of the assembly lines. Having raw materials such as rubber and steel available in the market, â€Å"more people would buy raw materials and products, which stimulated public spending throughout. † This gave Ford a chance to another company called â€Å"The Ford Manufacturing Company, which was started to produce engines, running gears and other car parts† (Tilting, 41). Ford realized that in order for the cars to be perfect, he needed another company to aka all his cars stronger, so different industries with different productions parts were created to increase the production of automobiles even more. Although Ford’s ultimate goal was to increase the production of automobile, he also focused on the efficiency of the automobiles. His major concern regarding the efficiency was â€Å"mainly towards the strength and reliability, knowing that the metal he was using for certain parts, such as the gears, was too brittle, so he looked out for a stronger kind of steel† (45). Ford knew that if his gears or any other car part broke, the car would be selves, so he wanted to guarantee that his car would be stronger and more efficient than anything else on the market. Thus, Ford not only expanded the production of automobiles, but also other industries that played a major role in producing an automobile. Consequently, Henry Ford has played a huge leadership role because he made Americans lives better. He used many techniques that improved the economy. He did most of this by expanding his company so cars were available to Americans, and by stimulating public spending through many industries. The auto industry provided tit a large market of steel, rubber, glass and petroleum products. All of which were available to consumers in the market at any time. Cars made exploration of the world outside easier and more affordable, which motivated public spending for good roads. His production line manufacturing was widely used for efficiency because before to work or other parts of the city. Many even traveled really far Just to get to work, because trains were mostly the means of transportation before the automobiles (Melodies). Shortly after the inventions of automobiles, the lives of many Americans hanged and the production of cars increased. How to cite Ford Motor Company, Papers

The above table shows that there has been a major increase in the amount of the selling and distribution expenses. The company has also increased the amount that it spent towards the administration expenses. The company had 0 impairment during the year 2015 and now, it has the impairment loss of about $90,000 thousand. The rise in the expenses is mainly due to the increase in the amount of the revenue as well. The revenue of the company increased to up to 3 times. Any investor would like to have an investment that is able to give him profit when he sells his investment along with a regular return on his investment. But as the annual report of the year 2016 states , the company was not able to comply with its targets that were set earlier and also went on to restructure itself and reprogram itself. This shows that the company is still inventing and in the course of hit and trial method. Hence, the investment in this company is not recommended. As per the listing rule 3.1, each company is duty bound to disclose the information which could affect any prudent investor from making an investment in the company. The following are some of the examples of the same, though not limited to: Any information that would result in the change in the activities or on the transactions of the company Any information that is mineral or hydrocarbon discovery Any information which is related with the material acquisition or the disposals of any asset Any information which is related with the granting or withdrawal of any material license Any information which pertains to the variation or the termination of any material agreement Any information which is related to the plaintiff or defendant in any case pending in court Any information which would affect the share price of the company in the market Any information which would lead to a change in the expectations in the market Any information which relates with the appointment of any liquidator etc. of the company Any information related with the event of default under or in an event which entitles the financier to terminate or any material which affects the material financial facility Any information which is related to the subscription of the securities or with the issue of the securities Giving or receiving of the notice which intends to make a takeover of the company Any rating that would be applied by the rating agency to the entity or its securities Change information which pertains to the stated change in the rating given by the agency to the company The investors are prone to some information which relates with the issue of securities. There is a broad set information which is available at the disposal of the investors. Such is the information which varies all across the dimensions of the business and its characteristics which includes in the timeliness, quality, routine etc. There are many pieces of information which are of an utmost importance for the investors. The example include the record of the past earnings of the company, forecasts of the earnings etc. another is the example of the voluntary earnings of the company which have been estimated by the management. These are the issues that are of interest for the investors. There is an improved disclosure of the activities due to the implications for the efficiency in the capital market and due to the subsequent allocation of the resources in the economy. The increased and the timely disclosure of the information would lead to lesser insider trading of the information availa ble with the management. The new rules regarding the following of the continuous disclosure policies aims at disclosure of these issues at the correct time only. It puts pressure on the boards that requires in the bold and clear regulatory response. This is the current uncertainty which merely means that the country is having an increased balanced approach when it comes to following of these rules and is also transparent market when the same is at stake. Even when the intention of the ASX is the relaxation of the disclosure obligations which allows the listed companies to meet the commercial objectives, changes to this rule is required and hence, must be same. Rather it would be good if the country could adopted the periodic disclosure approach which is being followed currently in the country of the United States. The main reason for the launch of this rule was the fact that after the year 2000, there were many of the legislative changes along with an increased enforcement action by the ASIC that led to the increased disclosure of the forecasts of the managements earnings which were non routine in nature. In respect of the routine forecasts, there was a significant increase in the disclosure of the forecast which has been observed. This is just in line with the finding that there is an increased disclosure which serves as the bad news for the non-routine forecasts. The reason behind this was not only reducing the amount of the information which is available between the managers and the investors but also, between the difference categories of the investors. An effective and a timely disclosure serves as a good measure of the good governance and also reinforces in the principles 5 which relates with the principles and the recommendations of corporate governance. When a company breaches this rule, then the company would be exposed to civil penalty proceedings and has a maximum fine of $ 1 million accompanied by the penalty proceedings and the enforceable undertakings and with the use of the infringement notices that were introduced in the year 2004. Even if the company complies with the infringement notice, even then the ASIC would go against the company to levy the penalty as against the company but this penalty would never affect the right of the third parties that would have been affected by the conduct of the company. This is as per section 13 17 HA (the conversation, 2017). The primary motive for this is to gain an understanding and the confidence, and the participation by the investors in the securities market. This is further expected to improve in depth, liquidity and the efficiency of these markets. This rule would make sure that the share price of the securities in the market indicates the correct underlying economic value of the same. It would reduce in the volatility of the prices of the securities since the investors have an access to an increased amount of information all about disclosing in the performance and the prospects of the entity and the information could be rapidly be factored into the prices of the securities of the company. This affects the information which is price sensitive. The following of this rule would minimise in the risk of any information which is not available in the market from being used by the investors so as to achieve a windfall gain. Also, there are some of the other forms of market abuses that could result in the withholding of the disclosing of the materially sensitive information. The companies would voluntarily disclose in the information which could affect the prices of the securities in the market (treasury, 2017). This information is of an utmost importance and this information must not be made available to any person or any third party unless and until it is made available for the use by the general public. There are some of the exceptions to this rule: the first being the information that is not permitted by rules and the regulations in the environment in which the company operates. These exceptions have the limited allowance for the communications between the rating agencies and the advisers in the normal course of the business (Thomson reuters, 2017). There is a communication with the person with whom the company has been negotiate. Or even intends to negotiate. In all of the above cases, the people in possession of this information have to keep in the information confidential and to themselves (FSA, 2017). The exceptions to this rule are termed as the safe harbour rules. These are the provisions or the rules that permit the disallowance of the formation form being available to the public in case, certain conditions are met. These conditions are as follows: Any information would not be made available to the people when any person is not expected to possess the same Any information would not be made available to the people which relates to the breach of any rule or regulation of law (NZX,2017). The compliance of this rule is very necessary. And also vital for each and every ASC listed company. The company in addition to following up of this rule has to have a strong compliance system which would help in raising the dense of the people that are involved in the contravention of these obligations. Section 674 (2B) of the Corporations Act, 2001 states the fact that the due diligence defence could take place when any reasonable person had exercised a reasonable care and carried on his duty so as to not make such of the information public. He ensured the compliance by helping the company in complying with this obligation and believed on a reasonable ground that the company complied with such obligation. When a company has a robust compliance system, then that shows that it took all reasonable precautions and had all the procedures in place so as to avoid any breaches of this rule (Claytonutz, 2017). In the nutshell, the introduction of this rule is good for the company because each investor plays with his own brain. Each investor is exposed to the same quality of the information as each one does. Exposing one to limited information about the company and exposing the other to immense information about the company would give an undue advantage to the investor that has limited amount of information. Hence, this is not good and though this rule is now. But I am confident that this new rule would serve the purpose for which the same has been introduced. These measures were implemented to promote everyone to recycle. Recyclable trash receptacles were put all over the cities. TV and posters advertisements were made to encourage everyone to recycle. Investments in the recycle industry increased. Resources that were not recyclable were used to produce final goods and were replaced with recyclable goods. For instance, pickles used to be sold in jars; however, now there are sold in plastic jars. Other measures are going to be implemented; however, the ones already implemented are solving the problem. As Americans started to see these measures being implemented, they were really encouraged. Americans started to be less wasteful. Home-recycling increased, and energy consumption decreased. For instance, those unnecessary lights were turned off. Useless water consumption decreased, so Americans had water running only when needed. Although many actions are needed, 77% of all Americans are now recycling. The government measures were successful, and certainly waste will decrease as time goes by. The environment is clearly better. Americans are wasteful people, however they are wasting less.

The Romanov Women Who Ruled Russia essays

The Romanov Women Who Ruled Russia essays The last Royal line to rule Russia was the Romanovs, out of this house six women ruled Russia. Sophia Alekseevna Romanov was acting Regent over Tsars Ivan V and Peter I from 1682 - 1689. Peter Is second wife Catherine I, would rule from 1725 -1727 after Peters death. Anne Ivanovna then ruled for ten years after the death of Peter II in 1730. For one year Anna Leopoldovna would be regent of her son Ivan VI. Elizabeth Petrovna would take control in 1741 and rule for 21 years. The last woman to rule Russia was Catherine II from 1762 1796 after the death of Peter III. Each would come in to power in their own way, but all would rule in the tsarist tradition. Tsarevna Sophia was born on September 17, 1657. The prospects of Sophia ruling Russia, with five brothers, was slight. Sophia however was tutored by Simeon Polotsky along with her brothers. Her middle brother Simeon died in June of 1669 and Aleksei the heir-apparent died in January of 1670. When Tsar Aleksei I died in January of 1676 the frail Fedor III became Tsar at fourteen. Some say this is when Sophia had her first taste of power as she was always at Fedor III side and that she even ruled through him. When Fedor III died four years later with no living heirs, the handicapped Ivan V at sixteen and younger half-brother Peter I at nine were both crowned tsar after the Rebellion of 1682. Again it has been said the Sophia had plotted with the streltsy guards before the rebellion, but in all accounts she did emerge as the main figure of authority during this three day period. It was then petitioned that Sophia supervise over both of the young tsars till they were able (mainly Ivan VI, who would always need guidance) to rule on their own. So Tsarevna Sophia Alekseevna Romanov was now regent of all Russia. During Sophias Regency, art, architecture and literature would display a distinctive new style referred to as &apos...

Why did communist governments rapidly collapse throughout Europe Essay

Why did communist governments rapidly collapse throughout Europe during the late 1980s and early 1990s - Essay Example For instance, US which eventually supported Europe by pushing for democracy with the intention of overthrowing Soviet’s autocratic leadership. The US gained support from the people though its intervention did not help much in liberation of the majority. However, their â€Å"diplomatic† intervention contributed immensely to the communism’s collapse by interfering with its (soviet) leadership. This is evident with the then period’s Reagan doctrine whose core purpose encompassed aiding anticommunist movements. Reagan in his quest to thwart communist’s threats and safeguard US’s interests, he embarked on constructive peacetime strategy that up to date comprise the world’s history. Consequently, this led to signing of subsequent treaties with Soviet aimed at both reducing and shunning any intentions of launching nuclear missiles either in space or land-based (Louka 353). Since, they were detrimental to humanity’s existence (Louka 353 ). This was Reagan’s rapport to destabilize and weaken states that seemed hostile to US’ interests. Therefore, this intervention besides other varied strategies by US undercover utterly rendered Soviet’s regime extremely weak to the extent of not being able to subdue states, which it had conquered. Since, they continued to receive support from outside in form of establishing movements, for instance, Poland’s Solidarity Trade union (Shevel 228). Solidarity in Poland acted as an umbrella of all anticommunist movements in the country whereby its action was immense to the then incumbent regime. Gradually, these Round The table negotiations and strong oppositions emanating from demonstrating workers or movements in varied states led to the collapse of communist system (Shevel 228). Another reason was due to the emergency of nationalism, which not only acted as a democratic project but also an anticommunist force. Nationalism received an immense support especia lly by numerous Communist dominated states that were in quest of liberty and evading Marxist theory. This was democratization process, which received support both from citizens and Polish Catholic Church whereby the latter rejected Soviet way of governance (Muehlenbeck 248). This is because almost all other religions in the state were under the control of Soviet except catholic church that assumed a unique position, hence resulted to offering support to the varied anticommunist movements (nationalism being one of them) (Muehlenbeck 248). Hence, actions of both nationalism and Polish Catholic Church against communist acted as an example to other states that were under the dominion of soviet, which also adopted the same agitation (Muehlenbeck 248). Communist governments in Europe lacked proper strategies both for infrastructure and economic reinvestment. The mainstream regime instead emphasized on military power with the intention of thwarting threats from other global states that sho wed interests in Europe, for instance, US. Poor economic investment yielded to numerous demonstrations especially by workers who cited they were experiencing underpayment besides other varied bad conditions while working. Hence, prompting citizens and powerful movements translate the presence of soviet in Europe did not have any significant impact but to dehumanize the ordinary people. Inadequate economic investment emanated from self-interests that characterized the leaders of the day besides the mainstream soviet regime instead of elevating the ordinary. This fueled the aspect of quick democratization in all states; Poland acting as an example that successfully managed to defy communism (Muehlenbeck 248).

Fallacies Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Fallacies - Assignment Example The language fallacy creates an impression on the readers of the article that the same issue occurs in the other communities located within the United States. People should not be misled by this fallacy. Language fallacy includes the use of language to create a false impression on the people (Engel, 1994). Further, to ensure the veracity of the statement, a research should be conducted. Evidence Fallacy. The article offers an assertion that is not supported by evidence. The violation creates an impression or statement that is not verified by evidence (Austin, 2008). Identifying the evidence fallacy, the statement â€Å"they will reduce public assistance rolls substantially and give our nation’s welfare reform effort a fighting chance to succeed.† indicates a false impression that reducing public assistance rolls substantially will automatically result to giving our nation’s welfare reform effort a fighting chance to succeed. There are strong probabilities that re ducing public assistance rolls substantially will not give our nation’s welfare reform a fighting chance to succeed. The news reporter should have verified his or her data, prior to the presentation to the public. The reporter will be surprised that thee is a possibility that the government continues to implement other programs that will alleviate the nation’s drug and alcohol abuse. Reasoning Fallacy. The author shows a reasoning fallacy. A reasoning fallacy crops up when the conclusions of the author are based on faulty gathering of supporting evidences. The author of the paper commits the unforgivable fallacy because of unskillful analysis of the facts (Sprague, 2008). Identifying the reasoning fallacy, the statement â€Å"State and local officials need not be tagged as tax-and-spend liberals if they devote more resources to addressing these problems among welfare recipients.† shows a generalization aspect of reasoning fallacy. The statement gives a false imp ression that all state and local officials are automatically tagged as tax-and-spend liberals if they devote more resources to addressing these problems among welfare recipients, giving an impression that the liberals are spendthrifts. Definitely, not all of the state and local officials should be tagged as tax-and-spend liberals because some state and local officials base their devoting more resources to the addressing these problems among welfare recipients on legal, evidential, and other legitimate grounds that exempt them from being tagged as tax-and-spend liberals. The author should have reported the facts, not to prematurely jump into conclusions. Using government funds to help the drug dependents and alcohol dependents should not be construed as unfavorable tax money allocation. Presence of fallacies. The fallacies diminish the quality of the author’s arguments. The readers can use common sense to detect if the author’s arguments are valid. By reading the articl e, the average reader will always say the statements, findings, or conclusions do not apply to all situations. There will always be exceptions to the author’s proposals. The author should add more data and researches to back up his proposed concepts. The purpose of the author’s fallacies is to increase acceptance of the author’

International Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 10

International Business - Essay Example al flaws of the gold standards during the world war one and policy responses by various economies that led to unpredictable international monetary contraction and deflation. In essence, the tying of countries’ money to gold is noted as directly responsible for the onset of the great depression, for example, Hubbard (1991) notes that countries which abandoned the gold standards earlier enough recovered from the great depression comparative to those that remained on gold. Hubbard, (1991) attributes the collapse of the gold standard to its mismanagement by global financial stakeholders during the interwar period most specifically, the 1920s and the 1930s. They establish that after the World War I, the redrawing of international boundaries limited free circulation of both real bills and consumer goods leading to the distortion of the gold standards. This led to the scuttling of the bill market and the ultimate government control of foreign trade in consumer goods favored due to political rather than economic interests thereby leading to a large scale collapse of the gold standards. According to Hubbard, (1991), the gold standard also collapsed as a result of sabotage by countries during the interwar period rather than the general belief that it collapsed due to its inner contradictions. Additionally, banking panics in the 1939s initiated by deflation which was imposed by the gold standard interfered with the normal flows of credit thereby negatively af fecting the performance of the real economy. Researches indicate that there have been repeated calls for policy considerations for a return to the gold standard due to the growing disillusionment with the presently favored politically controlled monetary policy. The case presented by proponents is that budget deficits and massive federal borrowings would be difficult to finance under the gold standard. They note that at present, the paper money system poses a number of problems hence various treasuries and

Aristotles Doctrine Of The Four Causes

Aristotles Doctrine Of The Four Causes Aristotles four causes theory uphold that all the causes can be grouped into varies divisions. The 4 causes are based on general laws, and these causes are associated with the question of why a thing is. To answer such question is to give a cause. Any artifact can be broken down to these four causes. There is the Material Cause, Formal Cause, Efficient Cause and the Final Cause. The Material Cause is the basic element that makes up a thing, in other words the cause of the object. For example the Material cause of a table would be wood, without the wood the table could not exist unless they were present in its work. The Formal Cause pertains the appearance or pattern with which these materials are accumulated. For example the Formal Cause of a table would be the arrangement, shape, and the design. Efficient Cause is the source or designer of that from which the thing became what it is. For instance the Efficient Cause of a table would be the carpenter who made it. Thus, the table is t he table it is, because of the particular carpenter who made it. Lastly, the Final cause is the end (telos), the ultimate purpose or exact form of this object that comes to be. The final cause of a table would be to place meals or to place objects on top of it. For Aristotle its very important to understand the purpose of something in order to understand how to live ethically particularly human beings. This is part of the explanation of the tables existence, for it would never have been built in the first place. Give a brief critical analysis of Aristotles idea of Happiness. The central question of ethics for Aristotle is, what does it take for human beings to lead a good life? Aristotle outlines 3 points that he thinks have to be fulfilled for some purpose to be ultimate. Ultimate goal has to be self- sufficient. Final goal. In other words something you want for its own sake, not as stepping stone for something else Attainable. Since All activities have a final cause, or leads to some other desire, Ultimately for Aristotle the one goal that seems to fulfill all these stipulations was Happiness (eudaimonia). Not in the narrow sense of mental or emotional state but rather in the sense of well being or flourishing. If human beings can find happiness, happiness by its self is self- sufficient. Aristotle says that people need to make choices and in order to make choices we have to develop certain habits or virtues, which will allow you to make the right choices. People need to understand and even necessary to be taught the virtues habits. You need to develop these virtues to develop a happy life, but the virtues are the means to the end. How do we achieve this end? In order to understand that, we need to understand how Aristotle understood the human soul. Aristotle divided the soul into 3 parts. The basic part of the soul is basically vegetative. Our bodies grow and develop by itself without any kind of consciou s control. Similarly, to the vegetable world because it takes place totally without rational control. Above the vegetable soul, its the animal level, the level of desires. As human beings Aristotle says we have certain responsibility to control our desires otherwise we would simply be no different then animals. And finally there is the rational part of the soul which controls the animal desires, as well as seeks for higher types of learning, education and higher types of gratification. Happiness is the activity of the soul according to reason and these activities must be according to virtue and excellence. If there are several virtues excellences then they must be the highest activity. If you detain happiness, you could only die happy. Aristotle distinguishes 2 types of virtues. 1. Intellectual Virtue and Moral virtue. Intellectual Virtue comes from teaching and Moral virtue comes from Habituation. We acquire these virtues through virtues acts. Aristotle considers the life of the G ods, because the activity of a God is contemplation. Which is the highest form of activity of the soul to achieve Happiness. The Gods are engaged in intellectual virtues. The Gods are not interested in human affairs. If there is a perfect life for Aristotle, which happiness it is in this existence, its the here and now not in the afterlife. The wise person is the one that studies the most, and the one that studies the most is the one that is loved by the Gods, because he is performing an activity the is accepted by the Gods. Therefore, Aristotle would say that if you reached happiness then you have achieved the ultimate human existence. Does Plato make a convincing case for why philosophers should rule society? According to Plato, the society is to consist of three classes workers, warriors and rulers. Each of which must stick to completing their direct commitment. As to the rulers, Platos opinion regarding them is very interesting and different from the views of other philosophers. In the Republic, he dwell on different types of rulers, which vary from democrat to tyrant, and he come to the conclusion that philosopher would be best choice for the country due to number of characteristics. For example, considering the aspect of love for honor, the dialogue between Plato and Socrates is shaped in the following way: What about an honor-lover? A rich man is honored by many people, so is a courageous one and a wise one, but the pleasure of studying the things that are cannot be tasted by anyone except for a philosopher.(Cohen M.C., p. 567) Another reason for the philosopher to be considered the best ruler according to Plato is the fact that unlike the rest of the rulers (monarch or tyrant), the philosopher is inclined to look for truth rather than prove his rightness to others. The philosopher is always open to new ideas and is not likely to use conventional methods which do not suit the situation. As the ideal candidate for the position of the ruler of the state is considered by Plato to be a philosopher, there are two logical ways of realization of this idea: a philosopher must become a king or a king mist become a philosopher. Either way leads to building a harmonious and strong state where everyone knows his place and fulfills his obligations honestly. It goes without saying that Platos works are full of bright ideas, inspiration and desire to improve the society he lived in. Moreover, they are still very topical and most of them underlie modern philosophical concepts. However his theory is hard to implement in real life due to its idealistic nature and the nature of the human animal. What is the relationship between the sun simile, the divided line and the allegory of the cave in Platos Republic? The Allegory of the cave in the Republic illustrates the effects of the education on the soul. It is a story showing how true reality is not always what we think it is. It is a story of tolerance and the power of possibility. Plato sums the Plato imagines a group of prisoners who have been kept in the cave their whole lives. They have been chained so they could not see behind themselves and they are forced to stare at the cave wall in front of them. Behind them a fire is burning and between the prisoners and the fire is a raised walkway. Each day a menagerie of objects cross the walkway such as animals, and people. Their shapes create a shadow play on the wall in front of the prisoners. This is the only world the prisoners have ever known. Then one day a prisoner was dragged out of the cave into the sun light, after some time adjusting to the blinding light, he noticed that it was the sun that governed everything in the visible realm and which was in one way or another responsible fo r everything they use to see. This is obviously the next stage. The free prisoner began to experience the world outside of the cave for the very first time and it was nothing like he could have ever imagined. With his new perception of the world the man returns to his friends and wants to convince them that what they were seeing was just an illusion. But the prisoners cannot recognize their own friend, he appearance as all things do, a shadow with distorted voice. This does not make the world outside of the cave any less real. The divided line explains Platos theory of how knowledge works and how we come to have knowledge and clarity of the soul. In the Allegory of the Cave the line simile explains the four types knowledge from lowest to the highest. They are, Illusions, Belief or Trust, Mathematical Knowledge and lastly Philosophical Knowledge. It illustrates that the truth works once we deal with reality. The Allegory of the Cave explains that if we want to seek the real truth we have to accept the pain of dropping all of our preconceived notions of what truth was before. The light of the fire inside the dwelling is the power of the sun, which represents the form or character of the good. Once its seen the conclusion must be that it turns out to be the cause of all that is right and good for everything. Aristotle appears to argue that we are responsible for our moral character. However, if childhood training counts for so much in developing moral character,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦.if we ourselves are not responsible for the training we receive? Virtue is a disposition involving choice. There are 2 parts to virtues. Intellectual virtue and Moral virtue. Intellectual virtue comes from teaching and moral virtue comes from habit. A decent person raises their children in a virtues way, since virtue comes with training and habituation. Therefore, we can say that it is obvious that we are not born with these characteristics but acquired them through nature of act.. We are responsible for the type of people we became, because we shape our moral character through choices and actions. For instance, a relationship (virtue), can be nourished through love and commitment to one another. Its not something that can be done inevitably but rather, voluntary. We are what we are, because of the things that we repeatedly do, and should not act ignorant nor make excuses. Example, becoming pianist by playing the piano, we became just by doing just actions. If it werent for our actions then teachers wouldnt be needed, for we would be born with suc h qualities. Explain Aristotles Doctrine of the mean. The doctrine of mean is Aristotles declaration to search for the middle ground, extremes exist in almost every aspect of life and one should seek for the mean. This mean is not an absolute one but a relative one, customized to the situation and person. But the location is always in between the two. For example in Nicomachean Ethics he lists the following examples; with respect to fear and confidence the mean is courage, excess in confidence leads to foolhardy and excess in fear leads to cowardice and with respect to honor and disgrace the mean is high-mindedness, excess of honor is called vanity and deficiency of it might be called humility or small-mindedness.

Employee morale Essay -- essays research papers

NON-TRADITIONAL WORKING HOURS IMPROVE EMPLOYEE MORALE & INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY Prepared for Mr. Robert Pigg, President Lakedale Manufacturing 1 Desert Storm Drive Niceville, FL 33870 Prepared by Human Resource Department Lakedale Manufacturing 320 Ardennes Street Arabia, NC 28357 Lakedale Manufacturing Human Resource Department 320 Ardennes Street Arabia, NC 28357 Mr. Robert Pigg, President Lakedale Manufacturing 1 Desert Storm Drive Niceville, FL 33870 Dear Mr. Pigg: Here is the report on the productivity and morale study concerning working hours you asked us to conduct. As you will see we have made recommendations to support the benefits of flexibility in working hours which will increase productivity and morale in the work place. This office is confident you will see the benefits in flexible working hours at the Lakedale Manufacturing Plant in North Carolina. We really appreciate the opportunity you have given this office to conduct a study of this magnitude. If you need additional information concerning this report or in implementing our recommendations, please call us. Sincerely yours, Gary Gobble Chief, Human Resources Department Laws and Regulations Policies and Procedures When it comes to laws and regulations, we must keep in mind that the relationship between an employee and the organization is a contractual one. The employee and the organization must agree on the terms and conditions that will govern their relationship. This agreement is made at the time the employee is hired for a certain position. Any change or modification to the original agreement must be agreed upon by both the employee and the organization. The laws and regulations that govern the contractual relationship come from several different sources and place constraints on the relationship. They may be statutory federal laws or state and local laws that supplement those found at the federal level. The constraints placed on the relationship are necessary. They seek to ensure a balance of power in the relationship as well as provide specific protections to both the employee and the organization. Up to this point Lakedale Manufacturing is in compliance with all federal, state and local laws. At this time the only legislation to mandate rights to alternative working time options is the Federal Part-Time Career Employment Act of 1978. This act made reduced-time options available... ...w skills and work at different tasks? Is there any specific schedule you need? Would you be available for over-time if needed? TIME REPORTING After we make selections of the teams we need to be define how we will record hours worked by these teams. How can we simplify the documentation process without having a mountain of paperwork? Since we already use Excel, we can design a flextime spreadsheet template for keeping track of hours worked by each employee. We can also buy the software from IT Resource Services. IT Resource Services offers this software in both the Mac or PC format. This spreadsheet automates all the time-consuming calculations necessary to track actual daily time worked and the balance of time accumulated under the flextime system. The spreadsheet can be printed at the end of each flextime reporting period to be submitted as the official report to Personnel Services. RECOMMENDATION To promote these family friendly programs, I recommend that we facilitate the team work project. I also recommend we begin the survey of our employees. To save time and man hours I believe we should contact IT Resource Services for procurement of the time keeping spreadsheet template.

Abuse of the First Amendment Essay

I can’t take on the world. However, a lot of the comments in websites and blog houses about Actor/Artist Lance Henriksen are very inappropriate and untrue. The majority of the comments attack Lance not only as a human being but also as an actor down to his choice of movies or film roles. Some comments attack his physical appearance. Well, let see how you look when you reach 66 years old. How can you attack a person that you do not know nor met? Things are said such as Lance took this role because he must have needed the money and that is all. So what, why does it matter why Lance took the movie or project? Is that your business or is that while writing your comments you were not creative enough to come up with anything else to write. Lance believes in the roles that he chooses; however, for the amateurs there a lot things that are out of an actor’s control regarding the rest of the movie or film and supporting cast including the final project. The sad thing is this is being done by highly indexed internet sites that come up in the top 5 to 10 web searches regarding Lance Henriksen. These are â€Å"Super Fans† of the Genres doing this. The Webmasters and/or Blogmasters of these highly ranked sites have a responsibility to cut the unnecessary crap out of the comments appearing on their sites. I thought public â€Å"character assassination† was during elections. I do not need to list the sites. You know who you are. Why are you so cruel? Your comments are not reviews that a person can decide whether they want to watch or buy a DVD with Lance Henriksen in it. They are so full of â€Å"potshots† at Lance the person, that the reviews are useless as far as the movie or film. We complain about what is said by the media and on television and printed in our newspapers then we crucify our own Genre actors via the Internet and worst than the tabloids. Are being hypocrites okay if it is done on the Internet? Be a Responsible Blogger August 22, 2006, 20:36 Due to the recent events surrounding the stalking of Actor Colin Farrell, in our opinion Fans, Bloggers, Blogmasters, and Webmasters must use the data obtained about the person or persons in their website responsibly. Do not allow yourselves to get caught up in the â€Å"indexing† race trying to get your site indexed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and/or the most popular by disclosing private information or data on your sites. We are responsible for the content on our websites. Therefore, if you have the â€Å"real† address of your celebrity and/or a picture of their homes do not post them on your sites. If you have their personal home telephone or cell number do not post that information. Do your part to protect your celebrity in the same manner you would want to be protected. Being the most popular website on the internet at the expense of subjecting a celebrity and/or any other â€Å"public† person to â€Å"stalkers† and/or other sick people that want to harm them is not worth it. And please do not post non-public private pictures of their children. If you have not been stalked you have no idea of the emotions involved in the ordeal. In addition, do not be naive. Celebrities and other â€Å"public† figures are not the most stalked group of people. We are. Yes, â€Å"Joe Blow† public. The only difference is that the â€Å"public† figure’s stalking becomes a news event. This incident with Actor Colin Farrell is very disturbing for our staff because we have member(s) that have been stalked and eventually attacked by the stalker. So again please, we urge you Fans, Bloggers, Blogmasters, and Webmasters to join our cause to protect each other and the people that are the subjects of our websites. Please join La Femme Nikita07 and Associates in protecting the private information of those mentioned above and all people. Thank you for your cooperation from the staff of La Femme Nikita07 and Associates!!!!!!!

Virtue is spelled Virtue

Virtue is spelled Virtue Virtue is spelled Virtue Virtue is spelled Virtue By Maeve Maddox Looking for tips on how to remove wallpaper, I found this headline on the HGTV page: How to Remove Wallpaper: Patience Is a Virture Curious to see if this was a common misspelling, I did a Google search and came up with 133,000 hits for virture. Many of them were from comments and forums where people often type quickly and may be forgiven for typos. Most occurred in the adage patience is a virtue. However, numerous examples of the misspelling occur in contexts in which the correct spelling was almost certainly in front of the writers eyes. Is A Virture Bags, Tote Bags, Messenger Bags This example is from an ad selling printed tote bags. The bags are printed with a message that says something or other is a virtue. The word is spelled correctly on the bags, which are pictured under the misspelled header. I dont knowwhen they decidedto make a virture out of SELFISHNESS. This quotation, presumably copied from a speech, appears on a political ad. Interview with Ronald Sandler, Author of Character and Environment: A Virture-Oriented Approach to Environmental Ethics This heads an article at the Columbia University site. The title on the pictured book cover is Character and Environment: A virtue-oriented approach to environmental ethics. Love Is a Virture This is a photo caption under a picture of what appears to be a poster. The words Love is a Virtue are on the photo itself. Copying words correctly is a virtue. How has the world changed for hospitals Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

How has the world changed for hospitals - Essay Example Based on that, the existence of technological gadgets such as smart phones, tablets and other smart devices has had an impact in the overall running of hospitals. These gadgets not only act and/ or are used as mini computers (small computers) but they can also be used by medical staff to report immediate issues; send emails to other colleagues; chat online; communicate through instant messaging; make urgent calls and even do online research. With regard to online medical research, the dawn of the internet as well as the information age has enhanced all forms of research to be conducted online. For example, if a medical student or a registered nurse (RN) wanted to conduct online research, they could be in a very comfortable position to use their hand held gadgets to perform these tasks. A number of medical technologies have also taken the form of â€Å"smart† equipments. This means that the medical equipment being utilized by practice not only undertakes its usual tasks, but it also tends to perform computing requirements, evaluation as well as analytical operations to the data and information provided to it by the practitioner in the hospital. A good example is the implementation of electronic health records (EHR). These digital health records have the capability to capture all of patient information. In addition to that, they also have the ability to evaluate the data and information that doctors feed to their database. That is, they can be in a position to evaluate whether the prescription given to the patient is valid or not. If not valid, EHR can be in a position to notify by sending messages to the user informing them that the information provided is incorrect. Hence, the user can be in a position to correct the information provided. More to that is th e fact that each time better equipment is unleashed by medical equipment manufacturers that promises to work and perform even better and faster than the previous equipment. As

Passing by Nella Larsen Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Passing by Nella Larsen - Essay Example The selection and the portrayal of the thematic issues in the novel just as is the case with many other types of literature relies on the selection of the literary elements as the below analysis of Passing portrays. Key among the literary elements is the use of first person narration in the novel. A voice is always essential in a novel since the author adopts a particular voice in conveying his or her message through the plot. In the Passing, the author adopts the first person narration technique. The author narrates the story through the experiences of the lead character, Irene Redfield. Living in the Harlem area of New York, Irene Redfield is a mixed race woman who strives to integrate in the racial discriminate American society at the time. The story in the novel thus recounts he life and experiences of Irene Redfield and her numerous white and African American friends as they face numerous challenges. The action in the novel opens up with Irene receiving a letter from her long lost friend, Clare Kendry. The letter reminds her of their times together and the experiences they had in the city. The author of the novel therefore stylistically transfers her audience back into the history of the characters through a literary device known as flash back. Irene remembers her relationship with Clare the two women are both of mixed ancestry. They therefore underwent similar treatments by the society. Their passionate friendship broke soon after Clare’s father died since she went to live with her aunt in a different state. The separation implied that the two would grow up differently (Wall 101). As such, they became two different women a feature in the novel that validates the tension that Irene experiences once she receives the letter. The flashback is a strategic literary device that the author employs deliberately with the view of providing an adequate platform for comparison. Just as the name suggests and the plot of the novel portrays,

History of Vehicles Essay Example for Free

History of Vehicles Essay Vehicles had provided humans a means of transportation and vehicles had been a great help in building early civilizations such as of Mesopotamia with its chariots, Egypt with its reed boats, and China with its wheelbarrow. The old had been improved; the new had been invented; and the future had been conceptualized. These had been the cycle of vehicles through the change of time. Looking ahead†¦ The Wheel and the Ship (3500 BC) The oldest wheel discovered was in Mesopotamia and is believed to be over fifty-five hundred years old. Rock drawings of ships were found in Egypt and are believed to have been drawn around 6000 BC. These thus proved that wheel and ships are known by man at that very early time and were used as a part of their trading and technology. Wheels are taught to had been conceptualized when â€Å"humans realized that heavy objects could be moved easier if something round, for example a fallen tree log, was placed under it and the object rolled over it† (Bellis, â€Å"The Invention of the Wheel†). First boats then were usually built of wood while animal skins, clay pots, and reeds had served as an alternative. The Wheelbarrow (181 234 AD) The wheelbarrow is believed to have originated from China and was invented by a general named Chuko Liang to transport supplies to injured soldiers. It is believed that â€Å"wheelbarrows do not exist in Europe before the 11th or 12th century (the earliest known Western depiction is in a window at Chartres Cathedral, dated around 1220 AD). Descriptions of the wheelbarrow in China refer to first century BC, and the oldest surviving picture, a frieze relief from a tomb-shrine in Szechuan province, dates from about 118 AD† (â€Å"Wheelbarrow†). The Early Triumphs to Fly (400 BC-1850s) Kite flying started by the Chinese had been the pioneer of man on how he could fly. Different thoughts as to how man could meet this objective had undergone. These included the experiment to imitate a bird by attaching feathers or light weight wood to arms which had been proven disastrous since human arms’ muscles are not like of birds and cannot move with a strength like of a bird. Other experiments though were not originally intended so as man could fly included the work of Hero of Alexandria on Aeolipile. â€Å"Hero mounted a sphere on top of a water kettle. A fire below the kettle turned the water into steam, and the gas traveled through pipes to the sphere. Two L-shaped tubes on opposite sides of the sphere allowed the gas to escape, which gave a thrust to the sphere that caused it to rotate. Aeolipile must be included in the history of vehicles because it gave the principle for engine created movement† (Bellis, â€Å"Early history of Flight†). In the 1480s, with over 100 drawings that illustrated theories on bird and mechanical flight, Leonardo da Vinci had also entered this search to man’s mean to fly (Bellis, Early history of Flight). Leonardo’s Ornithopter concept had been the basis to the invention of the modern day helicopter. In 1783, Jacques Etienne and Joseph Michel Montgolfier invented the first hot air balloon (â€Å"How Did We Learn to Fly Like the Birds? †). Using the smoke from a fire to blow hot air into a silk bag that was attached to a basket, they had been able to fly aboard the hot air balloons’ first passengers, a sheep, a rooster, and a duck. On November 21, 1783, the first ever successful manned flight took place sending Francois Laurent and Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier up in the air (Bellis, Early history of Flight). Further studies then went on. In the 1850’s, George Cayley, the considered founder of Aerodynamics, had made his contribution through his gliders wherein a young boy had been the first to fly. The Submarine (1578 – 1620) Designs for underwater boats or submarines date back to the 1500s and ideas for underwater travel date back even further but only in the year 1578 did appear a record of a craft for underwater navigation. â€Å"William Bourne, a former Royal Navy gunner, designed a completely enclosed boat that could be submerged and rowed beneath the surface (Bellis, â€Å"History of the Submarine 2†). Bourne’s idea had never been implemented but a similar apparatus was launched in 1605 (Bellis, History of the Submarine 2). The apparatus didn’t get farther as its designers did not considered the tenacity of underwater mud which caused the craft to stick in the river bottom in its first underwater trial. But in the year 1620, Cornelius Van Drebbel had invented the first â€Å"practical† submarine which was a rowboat covered with greased leather (Bellis, History of the Submarine 2). His submarine had successfully maneuvered at depths of 12 to 15 ft. below the surface of Thames River. He had then further made revisions of his first submarine and legends says that after repeated tests, King James I of England rode to one of his later models (â€Å"The Saga of the Submarine†). Despite success, Drebbel’s invention did not quickly amaze the British Navy that made submarine warfare infeasible during that time. Steam Powered Automobiles (1600 1700) Steam power had been known for the past centuries but it was only in the 1600’s where it had been in practical use. â€Å"Ferdinand Verbiest created a model steam carriage in 1678, that moved by using a principle that is used in the modern day turbine. In the 17th century the Dutch physicist, Christiaan Huygens built an engine that uses air pressure. About 1750, the French inventor Jacques de Vaucanson gave a demonstration of a carriage propelled by a large clockwork engine. The steam engine had then developed the motorized land transport by the 1760s† (Brainard). The first built automobile is attributed to Nicolas Joseph Cugnot in the year 1769. He made his three wheeled steam driven tractor intending to help the French army to move its heavy artillery pieces in and around Paris (Brainard). His being the first had made also his automobile to be also the first to be involved in an automobile accident in 1771. Steamboat (1783 1787) After a century of steam power exploration used in automobiles, development of steam powered boats then took place. In 1783, the first practical steamboat was demonstrated by Marquis Claude Francois de Jouffroy d’Abbans – a paddle wheel steamboat. â€Å"The era of the steamboat then began in America in 1787 when John Fitch (1743-1798) made the first successful trial of a forty-five-foot steamboat on the Delaware River on August 22, 1787, in the presence of members of the Constitutional Convention. Fitch later built a larger vessel that carried passengers and freight between Philadelphia and Burlington, New Jersey. † (Bellis, â€Å"History of Steamboats†). Modern Bicycles (1790) The next notable improvement in the history of vehicles is the invention of modern day bicycles which is disputed on whether the invention of Pierre and Ernest Michaux were the first ever built or not. â€Å"Some history books states that Pierre and Ernest Michaux, the French father and son team of carriage-makers, invented the first bicycle during the 1860s. Historians now disagree and there is supporting evidence that the bicycle is already known before. However, historians all agree that Pierre and Ernest Michaux invent the modern bicycle pedal and cranks in 1861. † (Bellis, â€Å"Bicycle History†, â€Å"Bicycle History in Debate†). Steam Powered Locomotives (1801) Locomotives were designed first by Richard Trevithick but not originally for railroad tracks but for roads while George Stephenson is regarded as the inventor of the first steam locomotive engine for railroads. â€Å"Richard Trevithicks invention is considered the first tramway locomotive, however, it was designed for a road, not for a railroad. † (Bellis, â€Å"Richard Trevithick†). The Motorcycles (1867) The mechanical version of the bicycles had been born with the invention of motorcycles in 1867. â€Å"American, Sylvester Howard Roper (1823-1896) invented a two-cylinder, steam-engine motorcycle (powered by coal) in 1867. This can be considered the first motorcycle, if you allow your description of a motorcycle to include a steam engine. † (Bellis, â€Å"Motorcycle†).

Creation of a Versatile Computer System: CPU and RAM

Creation of a Versatile Computer System: CPU and RAM Jay Kybert I have tried to create a versatile computer system that everyone can use, with a few exceptions. The CPU, RAM, Motherboard, etc. remains the same throughout each system, however certain people require different inputs, outputs etc. In these cases, I have changed the computer system slightly and recorded the price. Link to website used: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/dG7cBP All prices were accurate at the time this was created. This CPU is an older generation but remains a great CPU. I could have chosen an i7 model for the hyper-threading but, along with the increase in price; other components may need to be upgraded to avoid a bottleneck. The 2.7GHz should provide a good level of speed, but overclocking is an option in case it is not fast enough however, this is not recommend for general work use due to the risk. Its power consumption is fairly low for a CPU, at 65 watts. The PSU is fully capable of supplying power to all of the components. It uses the socket 1151 (meaning 1151 pins). However, on this CPU, the motherboard houses the pins instead of the CPU itself. This cooler has a moderately sized heatsink and a fan to push (or pull) air around the CPU. It is compatible with the motherboard the computer will have too. Since I went with a mid-tier CPU, I needed a good level of cooling but nothing massive. This is why I settled for a heat sink and fan, compared with a higher tier water-cooled system. Another reason I chose a traditional heat sink of water-cooling is because of the possibility of water leaking and the management/replacement of water, which can be a difficult task to carry out safely. I chose this specific thermal paste simply due to its cost. There are more efficient compounds available but for a much higher price. In addition, this thermal paste will last a long time if used correctly, which provides a great value for money. This motherboard is a standard ATX motherboard, which fits the chipset on the CPU. In addition, I decided to spend a little more on this motherboard for its newer features. Since it is more modern, there is always the option to upgrade components. This motherboard does fit inside the computer case I have selected with enough room left for cable routing. It has four available RAM slots, which will be more than enough memory for everyone. I chose to go for 16GB since some designing software stresses the memory. In addition, this memory is DDR4, the newest but only type of memory that the motherboard I chose supports. It runs at 2133 MHz, which should provide a good level of performance and allow for upgrades since it only uses two of the four RAM slots on the motherboard. There are lots of different HDDs available but I chose Western Digital since it is a well-known company. I opted for a 3.5 HDD since they spin faster than laptop drives and my case has space for it. This means that the HDD will be able to read and write data slightly faster than other models. Furthermore, I chose 1TB which should be enough storage for a single work computer. This graphics card is part of the newest generation of NVIDIAs GPUs. Although it is one of the lower-end cards, it can run intensive stress tests and benchmarks at a steady usage at 1080p. It is more than enough for designing software at HD resolution, with 4GB of VRAM it should be able to render and load these designs with ease. It is compatible with the motherboard and has room in the case to fit. I chose this case since it can fit an ATX motherboard (The Z170 I Chose is an ATX). Also, there is lots of room for expansion within the case. There is room for an optical drive which may be useful. Furthermore, there is a lot of room for 120mm/140mm fans that will keep the computer cool and running stable. Finally, there is enough room inside the case the house the GPU. I chose this PSU since it supplies 500W of power which is more than enough for the current system. In addition, it is an ATX PSU which is compatible with the case. It also is certified (even though it is only bronze) which shows its efficiency and that it doesnt produce much heat. I chose to spend a little more money than what was necessary on the PSU since faulty or poor quality PSUs can destroy other components. The total wattage of the computer is   ~235 watts. This means I could have bought a 300w PSU but along with that being barely enough, a 500w PSU also allows the computers to be upgraded without having to worry about power consumption. Modern optical drives are compatible with most computers. I made sure my case supports an optical drive so there will be no compatibility issues or lack of space for this component. I couldve spent some more money on the optical drive and chose a different model that may have been more reliable or come with warranty but I decided to save money since the optical drive wont be used frequently anyway. The only time this will see use is when using older software that requires a disc installation. Even though Windows 7 isnt the newest Windows OS, many people are comfortable using it and grew up with it (or similar versions). The jump to 8/8.1 and 10 have drastically changed the layout and general use, making it harder to use. This is why I chose an older version that people are happy with. It is also 64-Bit which supports more applications and has more advanced compatible hardware. I chose a standard HD (1080p) monitor. Asus is a reliable brand so the image quality should be great; this is especially good for designing software. I couldve gone for a 1440p or 4k monitor but, for the price, they werent worth it. It has several ports that the graphics card supports so it can easily connect. In addition, if I chose a higher resolution monitor, I would also need to upgrade the graphics card due to the amount of pixels. The keyboard didnt require a specific model, I chose from a well-known brand that produced a well-received keyboard. It uses a USB 2.0 connection between the motherboard (which is compatible with the current motherboard). I chose this mouse because it is from a trusted brand and the fact that it is wireless. This means that there will be fewer wires running across desks. This mouse works by using USB wireless transmitter. As a result, there may be a little latency between movement and it appearing on the screen, but I believe that having a wired mouse may cause problems as it can catch on objects and tear over time or even break the motherboard port if ripped out. I chose to buy a total of six fans (3 dual packs) since the case I purchased supports this many. The front of the case supports 2x120mm or 2x140mm fans, the top supports the same and the back has a 120mm fan as well as the bottom. The front fans can be intakes, along with the bottom, while the top and rear fans can be exhaust fans, blowing air out. Having the same amount of fans blowing in and out make the case have neutral pressure, compared with positive or negative pressure, which can lead to dust build up, or higher temperatures. I chose to purchase a wired network adapter using a PCI-E connector that will allow the computer to have internet access using a wired (Ethernet connection). The motherboard I chose supports this type of connection. Type of Work: Designs kitchens in 3D * Wants a brand new computer built from scratch. * Has RSI. *Requires scanning in documents. *Two mobile devices for communicating. *Fully networked computers system. I chose to stay with a mouse even though Mr Ramsey has RSI and this may affect his ability to use it. A mouse is this optimal choice for an input device due to its versatility across a number different uses, especially in design software that requires accuracy. However, I chose a vertical mouse since this might prove to be a great substitute rather than a normal mouse. A vertical mouse reduces the strain in the arm and keeps the arm in a relaxed state; this could reduce the pain from RSI. This All-in-One printer can print, scan, copy and fax which should be enough options. As well as being wireless, the printer can print up to 22 pages per minute in black and 18 per minute with colour with a DPI resolution of 12001200. Again, this proves that this machine is fast as well as efficient. The only reoccurring cost is the ink that needs to be replaced occasionally. I chose this phone for communication since it is from a respected brand that has good customer service. This means that if there were any faults, it should be easy enough to resolve, it also means that the build-quality and specifications of the phone are competitive with other brands, meaning the phone has good internal hardware. Since Mr Ramsey requires two mobile devices for communicating, I chose to buy two of the same model since it makes it easier for him to use both as he doesnt have to learn to use two different OSs. Deals with the customers and take down the requirements and measurements of the customers kitchens. *Needs brand new complete computers. *Aadi is left handed. * Require to take photographic evidence of the customers kitchens. I chose this mouse because of its left-handed design. This means that Aadi can use this mouse normally. Even though the mouse is expensive, it comes from a well-known company that specialises in peripherals. Also, the mouse has a variety of adjustable settings, an example being DPI which can be changed to what Aadi prefers. Petra, Aadi and Soolin all required a camera for their work; I decided on this CANON EOS. It is a DLS camera with 18 megapixels, which will provide a 1080p photo. In addition, this model has a sharp LCD screen to change the settings to what is preferred. Another reason I chose this camera is its wireless feature. Once Petra/Aadi/Soolin has taken photos, they dont need to transfer them via a USB or SD card. Instead, the camera is a wireless storage device as well, meaning that the photos can be accessed from their computers without any physical, wired connection. Confirms the order with the customer and looks after the payments. NOTE: The cost of this Microsoft package is  £11.30 monthly. A year of this works out at  £135.60. The reason I chose this package was that it included both the communication software (Skype) and the recording information software (Excel). In addition, this package comes with office essentials like Word, PowerPoint, etc. Since this is a subscription, Brian will be given an email needed to use this software; this means that the software can be used anywhere, as long as the email is provided. In addition to this, there are other benefits to the business premium package like 50GB for emails, 1TB Cloud Storage, HD Video Conferencing and more. Contacts suppliers when stock is low and maintains the stock levels. Sends out the kitchen units and supplies to the customer with a delivery note. * Has a slight visual impairment. * Requires software to look after the records. * Each package has a barcode so it can be tracked. Due to Tsais visual impairment, I thought I higher resolution screen could help him see the screen more clearly. Also, I decided on a 27-inch screen that is larger than a standard office monitor, which should help with his visual impairment. Furthermore, I decided against getting a higher refresh rate monitor. There were choices of 120Hz or even 144Hz but this wouldnt really affect the visual impairment, it would just make transitions smoother and they are more expensive. NOTE: The cost of this Microsoft package ( £11.30) is a monthly recurring payment. A year of this works out at  £135.60. Like with Brian, the Office 365 Business Premium is a subscription-based software which will allow Tsai to look at records. Using network-attached storage (NAS) or a central server, Brian can wirelessly share any excel spreadsheets or databases with Tsai and vice versa. Also, Tsai is a warehouse manager which could mean he isnt always sitting at a desk. Therefore, he can use the Office 365 software on a phone or tablet. This printer will allow Tsai to create and print off any barcodes to track packages. It has an Ethernet and USB port, the Ethernet being for a connection to the internet to print of barcode designs and the USB for a connection to the computer itself. This barcode scanner can identify barcodes and the package assigned to it. This will make managing a warehouse easier as rather than using serial numbers or other methods of recording lots of information, a barcode can be applied to all packages. This means that in the future, a database can hold all of the information and by scanning a barcode, information is given about the item.
